I have 2001 Honda civic EX with 200,000+ miles. I run the motor to redline every time I can. I have always used Pep Boys generic oil (99 cents/qt.) and changed it at the manufacturer's 10,000 suggested interval. Recently I've had to diagnose a water disappearance problem. I did a leak-down test on each cylinder to see if I could generate bubles or a level rise in the rad water. To my surprise this high-milage engine showed less than 5% loss eventhough it uses about 3 qts per 10,000 miles. I use 10w40 synthetic (from a variety of sources) in my 50,000 mile (48K+ actual) TTZ but I remeber reading a Consumer Report article once where they tested a number of NYC taxis. They all started as new cars. Some had oil changes at certain intervals and others only oil was added and never changed. After these cars reached 100,000 miles the motors were opened and inspected for wear. CR did not find and significant differences amongst the various test subjects.
